Star Shaped Rice Krispy Treats

These treats are simply colored Rice Krispy treats that are layered and cut out with cookie cutters.  It takes a little bit of extra time to make three separate batches of treats but it is worth it.  You can also make one big batch of goo, divide it into three parts and then color it.  You will just have to work fast to get each layer in place before the goo begins to harden.

You will need:

3 Tbsp. of butter, divided

6 cups of Rice Krispys, divided

1 bag of marshmallows, divided

A pot and a spoon

A 9 inch square pan

Red and blue food coloring

A 2 inch star cookie cutter

Popsicle sticks

Marshmallow goo

Step 1.  Melt the butter and marshmallows.

Melt 1 Tbsp. of butter in the pot over medium heat.  Turn the heat to low and add 1/3 of the marshmallows.  (This will be about 12 large marshmallows or 1 3/4 cups of mini marshamallows.)  Stir gentley until the marshmallows are melted.

Step 3.  Make the first layer.

Add 2 cups of Rice Krispy treats and stir until they are evenly coated.  Pour them into a greased 9 x 9 pan.  When they are cool enough to touch press them into an even layer.

Step 4.  Make the second layer.

Melt another tablespoon of butter and another 1/3 of the marshmallows, just as you did before.  Don't color the marshmallow goo this time.  Just add the two cups of Rice Krispy treats and stir until they are evenly coated.  Pour them on top of the red layer.  Press them down to make an even layer of white Rice Krispy treats on top of the red layer.

The blue layer

Step 5.  Make the third layer.

Melt another Tbsp. of butter and the last marshamallows.  Dye the goo blue this time.  Add the last 2 cups of Rice Krispy treats and stir until they are evenly coated.  Pour them on top of the white layer and press them down to make another even layer.

Step 7.  Cut out the stars.

Use the cookie cutter to cut out stars.  You will be able to make 6-8 stars.  Save the in between bits for snacking, or you can mush them together to make marble-like treats.

Step 8.  Add the sticks.

Push the popsicle sticks into the bottom of the stars.  Keep the treats covered until you are ready to serve them.

Rice Krispys have been around since 1927.  Rice Krispy treats were invented in 1939.  This treat is a true classic.  It is still popular more than 70 years later!
