Chocolate Pilgrim Hats

These Pilgrim hats are made from Oreo cookies and Reese's peanut butter cups.  They make perfect Thanksgiving cupcake decorations although you could also use them on cakes, cookies, or to garnish fruit and cheese trays.  They are also a fun craft to make with children.  You don't even need the cupcakes.  Just enjoy making the hats and then eat them.  Yum!

You will need:

1.  Frosted cupcakes

2.  Oreo cookies, 1 for every 2 cupcakes

3.  Peanut butter cups, 1 for each cupcake

4.  White frosting

5.  A decorating tube with a round tip #3

6.  A sharp knife

Cupcakes with pilgrim hats on top of them made from cookies and candy.
An Oreo cookie cut in half 1.  Carefully slice an Oreo in half.  If you do it perfectly, you will have a circle of white filling on each side.  If the circle of filling isn't quite even, put frosting in the empty places.
A peanut butter cup on top of the Oreo 2.  Press a peanut butter cup onto the Oreo half.  With the frosting, pipe a circle of white frosting around the edge of the peanut butter cup if the filling does not form a white circle.
Add trim to the peanut butter cup so it looks like a little pilgrim's hat 3.  Add a little square to the front of the hat.
The finished hat on a cupcake 4.  Put your little hat on a cupcake.

When we think of the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving, we picture the men wearing black and white clothing and black hats with white buckles.  In fact, the Pilgrims probably wore colored clothes in practical styles.  They did have to work hard in the New World, after all.  However, since the "Pilgrim hat" is associated with Thanksgiving, go ahead and use it to decorate your cupcakes.
