Playdough Rose

These roses can be made from playdough, salt dough or clay.  They are easy enough for six and seven year olds.

You will need:

1.  Playdough, clay, or salt dough

If you don't have Playdough or clay, make our     Easy Salt Dough  or Cooked Salt Dough.

Start with Palydough, salt dough, or clay
Make a ball about 1/2 inch big  1.  Take a small piece of clay and roll it into a ball about 1/2 inch in diameter.
Flatten it 2.  Flatten the ball into a roughly circular shape.
Roll it up like a burrito 3.  Roll the flattened dough into a buritto shape.
Make another ball and flatten it  4.  Make another ball and flatten it.
Wrap it around the burrito 5.  Wrap it around the "burrito."
Continue making balls, flattening them, and wrapping them around the rose 6.  Continue to flatten little balls of dough and wrap them around the burrito.  Your rose will get bigger with each piece you add.
Remove excess clay or dough  7.  When your rose is as big as you want it to be, gently pinch any extra dough away from the bottom of the rose.
Let your rose air dry  8.  Touch up the petals.  Let your rose sit for two or three days until it is dry.  If you like, you can add leaves.

You make roses of all colors and sizes.  Add stems and leaves!

Roses

There are over 100 species of roses, and this beautiful and fragrant flower has been cultivated for thousands of years.  Until the 18th century, most roses resembled what we now call "wild roses."   In the late eighteenth century, a highly cultivated hybrid rose was brought to Europe from China.  Most modern roses stem from these roses.  The rose is the national flower of England and red roses have become widely recognized as symbols of romantic love.

Crafts

A paper, rock, and scissors is almost all you need to make this cute little mouse. This craft is easy enough for most kids, although it can get sticky! Once you've tried this cute, white mouse, try to make a pink piggie or a bunny rabbit.

Handprint critters are a perfect way to decorate cards or pictures for Mom, Dad, Grandma, and Grandpa. They make cute personalized classroom decorations, too.

It's easy to make a pop card. Take a picture, paper, and glue. Make a few simple cuts and folds. You will have a marvelous greeting card.
